The Hat/Slat
Frequently Asked Questions

What is it?  The Hat/Slat is an ultra-thin alloy metal slat that can be placed between the hi-hat cymbals, or mounted to the top of the hi-hat clutch.  It can be easily attached or removed from the hi-hat depending on a players needs.

How does it affect the sound?  The Hat Slat creates secondary altered tones by picking up and reflecting primary sounds created by the hi-hat cymbals, like when the hi-hat is closed with foot action, or struck by a stick.  It's like a natural reverb plate, reacting to the initial attack.  It picks up that sound and then reflects back a modified version.

Can you get different sounds?  The five hang holes allow players to experiment with different sound options.  Different hi-hat cymbals create different sounds, which also play into the overall sound you will get.  Each hang hole produces a different "bend" on the Hat Slat metal, in turn creating a different sound texture and pitch.  The Hat Slat will alter sound, pitch, decay, bend, reverb and overall ambience of the hi-hat.

Where would I use it?  The Hat Slat is great in the studio as that "alternate sound" you might be looking for.  Some songs may require a different vibe from your current hi-hat setup.  Say you are looking for a more washed out sound, or trashy white noise effect.  The Hat Slat will get those types of sounds easily, without going out and buying a whole new set of hi-hat cymbals.

How about live?  It's also very cool for live performances.  Not only is it a "what the heck is that product", but it's applications live are very hip.  Say you want to alter the sound of your hi-hat for a special techno or acoustic number.  It may be the perfect option you're looking for.

How can you attach it live?  This is really cool.  It attaches in about 5 seconds.  Simply lift your top hi-hat cymbal off, then slide the Hat Slat down the hi-hat rod to sit inside the bottom hat.  Then replace the top cymbal.  This easy on-off feature places the Hat Slat directly in between the hi-hat cymbals, for a maximum reflective sound effect.

Does it have any other applications?  Yes - more to come shortly. . . stay tuned!!
